Tokyo Metropolitan University, Department of Management, Science and Academic Affairs Division [Recruited in April 25]
■Introducing my current job
I am in charge of all academic affairs related to graduate schools. We handle the preparation of materials for discussion of doctoral theses at faculty meetings, as well as clerical work related to course registration and grade management for current students.
■What has been difficult so far?
I will never forget the customer service I received in April, just after I started working. I was unable to answer any of the students' inquiries and was confused myself.
■What made you happy?
I will never forget the sense of accomplishment I felt when I was able to improve a previous initiative on the committee I was in charge of.
■What do you usually keep in mind?
Personally, when dealing with customers at a counter or over the phone, I tend to respond based on my impressions and thoughts at the time, as it is a moment-by-moment interaction. To overcome this, I try to check the rules on a daily basis when I think of it so that I can give answers that take into account the rules behind the work.
■What's the atmosphere like at work?
I'm excited in a good way. Students come, teachers come, the phone rings with inquiries...but of course I also have time to sit at my desk. Because of this kind of environment, I think it's easy to feel like you're working at a university.
■What made you want to apply?
I was looking for a job with the idea that I wanted to interact with people from various positions through my work. I joined this company because I thought it was a perfect fit for the ideas above.
■What is the difference between the image you had at the beginning and after joining the company?
Before I started working, I vaguely thought that for the first year or so, I would just do what my tutors and senior staff taught me. While working, I learned not only to be taught, but also to review past materials, exchange my ideas with the tutor, and share my thoughts and opinions. I felt it was important to have it too.
■What kind of work would you like to do in the future?
First of all, I would like to improve my professionalism in academic affairs. In the future, I would like to be in charge of various tasks while maintaining an educational affairs perspective.
■What are your future aspirations?
As a university employee, I believe that I should acquire enough knowledge to be able to express my own opinions in various discussions regarding higher education.
As a staff member, I want to be a staff member that students and faculty remember.
■A message to everyone aiming to become a corporate employee
University staff have a variety of duties (teaching affairs, accounting, etc.), so please be flexible in your job search and do not stick to your current ideas.
