Chairman's message

A place to generate new knowledge to solve global issues

Developing human resources and strengthening research capabilities to enhance the international competitiveness of Japan and Tokyo

My name is Yasuo Nakayama, and I will be the new president of Tokyo Metropolitan University Corporation from 2025.
Our corporation has two universities (Tokyo Metropolitan University and Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Industrial Technology) and one technical college (Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology), and is steadily advancing its efforts in accordance with its fourth medium-term plan.
Tokyo Metropolitan University will open an international finance human resources development program this year, introduce English degree programs into existing departments, and begin preparations for the establishment of a new international faculty in 2028. The Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology's educational program to train digital transformation leaders who can handle the next generation of industrial technology has been selected for a subsidy program from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In addition, the National College of Industrial Technology won the top prize at DCON2024 (note) for the development of a system to prevent bank transfer fraud, truly achieving results as an initiative that contributes to solving social issues.(Note) 2024th National College of Technology Deep Learning Contest XNUMX

While Japan has been declining in global competitiveness rankings such as the IMD in Switzerland in recent years, Tokyo has been highly rated, ranking third for the ninth consecutive year in the "2024 Global City Rankings," which evaluates the overall strength of major cities around the world, and is truly playing the role of a driving force for the Japanese economy. Now that the Japanese economy has finally escaped a long period of deflation and is entering a virtuous cycle from contraction to growth, Tokyo, as the driving force, needs to further strengthen its international competitiveness. Tokyo has the great strength of being a capital city, namely its agglomeration and diversity, and the power of innovation that arises from this will be the driving force behind raising Japan's position in the world.

As an "institution of higher education in a major city" established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, we will make full use of the city's power to strive to develop human resources and strengthen research capabilities that will increase our international competitiveness.

The establishment of a new international faculty at Tokyo Metropolitan University will be a lever for this. We will significantly increase the number of Japanese students studying abroad and the number of international students, and create an environment in which they can grow into global human resources who can tackle global issues through friendly competition. In addition, in order to further strengthen research capabilities with a global perspective, we will create an environment in which excellent researchers from Japan and abroad can thrive. In order to foster highly skilled professionals and manufacturing specialists who can immediately respond to the challenges and needs of the industrial and financial worlds in a rapidly changing environment both domestically and internationally, the Graduate Institute of Industrial Technology and the National College of Industrial Technology will work to further strengthen their collaboration with Tokyo Metropolitan University, while also making full use of the network I have cultivated to date, to activate communication with both industries.

Through these accumulated efforts, I would like to contribute to society by making our organization a place that generates new knowledge to solve global issues and produces talented people who can use that knowledge to thrive on the world stage, and by making our organization a platform for education and research that supports the sustainable growth of Japan, Tokyo, and other parts of society.

June 2025
Yasuo Nakayama
